The Kibati site had a population of 6,000 until the recent fighting started just over a week ago when the camp population surged to an estimated 40,000 people.

CONGO: UN TROOPS MUST DEPLOY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

The UN Security Council decision to deploy an extra 3,000 troops, to bolster its peacekeeping force, is a welcome step. However it is the implementation that matters. We are still receiving reports of killings, rape and sexual violence against women and girls, and the recruitment of child soldiers. The people of DRC urgently need to see the promised reinforcement of MONUC troops on the ground protecting them from attack.
